From the office of Mayor George Schloegel

Many of us will be keeping an eye on the Gulf of Mexico this weekend. As of this writing, former Hurricane Ida had just finished drenching Central America as a tropical depression, but forecasters believed it had some chance of strengthening and heading toward the northern Gulf.

The storm was projected to cross over Honduras and emerge into the Caribbean Friday night.

The Associated Press reported today that Ida was expected to regain some force over the Caribbean and the still tentative forecast track showed it grazing the Cancun region of Mexico as a tropical storm by Monday morning, then heading toward the U.S. Gulf Coast.

It is far too early to know with any certainty where this storm will end up, however, it is never too early to start making preparations to protect your family and property.

A storm this late in the year is not as common as those during the hot summer months, but nevertheless, we cannot afford to let our guard down.

We are urging the people of Gulfport to run down their checklists of hurricane supplies once more this weekend. For help gathering necessary supplies, tips on protecting life and property and for the most up-to-date forecast information, please click here to visit the Weather Page on the city’s website.

In addition, the National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood watch for our area until Tuesday morning and we should all use this weekend to make sure our property is in order.

In other news this week, we made a very exciting announcement on Tuesday that the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo will be coming home to Gulfport next year.

The rodeo’s return was made possible through a lot of hard work by many people, and we want to thank the rodeo’s board of directors, the Island View Casino and the Port of Gulfport.

Also, we want to thank the Harrison County Board of Supervisors who gave the rodeo a home for two years following Hurricane Katrina, and the City of Biloxi who did the same for the previous two years.

The Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo started in Gulfport many years ago, back in 1948, and we are proud to finally have it back home.

Have a great weekend and thank you for all that you do to make Gulfport one of America’s finest cities.

Sincerely,

George Schloegel
Mayor
