Police and firefighters rescue puppies from burning building

Gulfport firefighters responded to a house fire around 12:30 p.m. today on Indiana Avenue, near Adams Street, just in time to save the lives of two puppies and an adult dog trapped inside the inferno.

Five units and more than a dozen firefighters battled the blaze. No one was home at the time of the fire.

Firefighters tore into the building and pulled the dogs to safety. Animal Control Officer Patricia Musgrove and firefighter Steve Kerns gave the puppies oxygen and checked them for injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
