City Hall announces forth-annual scholarship
GULFPORT — Mayor George Schloegel announced today the city is now accepting applications for the forth-annual Ronnie Hebert Spirit of Gulfport Scholarship.
Ronnie was a fixture at Gulfport sporting events for more than 40 years, waving his white towel with pride and dedication. On February 27, 2008, he died at the age of 65.
The city mourned the loss of Mr. Herbert, whose enthusiasm and love for Gulfport’s youth was real and long lived, and the void created by his passing was deeply felt throughout our city.
A few days after Ronnie’s death, former Mayor Brent Warr announced the scholarship during his 2008 State of the City address.
Ronnie lived life to its fullest, always with a positive outlook, and through this scholarship, those very same qualities — citizenship and a positive attitude — will be rewarded in his name.
The scholarship may be used for public or private post-secondary education, including colleges, universities, community and technical colleges. Eligible applicants must be full-time high school seniors, residing in the City of Gulfport at the time the application is submitted and graduating at the end of the 2011 school year.
The application form can be found here. The forms should be completed and mailed to City Hall’s Scholarship Committee no later than Thursday, May 5th at 5 p.m.
