Wear your Black & Gold on Friday

GULFPORT — As the New Orleans Saints prepare to make history on Sunday by winning their first NFC Championship and punching their ticket to the franchise’s first Super Bowl, the City of Gulfport will be showing its support.

It’s well known that the “Who Dat Nation” stretches across the Southeast, and in Gulfport, Friday has unofficially been declared Black & Gold Day.

City employees will be decked out in black and gold at work, and Mayor George Schloegel’s administration is asking the public to do the same.

Sport your jerseys or t-shirts, black and gold neckties or dress shirts (whatever your boss might allow) to work on Friday and be part of this history-in-the-making moment.

“For as long as we’ve been cheering for the Saints, did any of us ever think we’d hear the words Saints and Super Bowl in the same sentence?” Mayor Schloegel asked. “Sunday, that could very well happen.”

The Saints meet the Minnesota Vikings in the Superdome on Sunday to determine who will represent the NFC in Super Bowl XLIV. Kickoff is set for 5:40 p.m.

What they’re saying about Sunday’s NFC Championship

“If the Saints win this weekend, we expect the Louisiana Superdome to levitate off the ground, stop at Parkway Bakery & Tavern for a roast beef po'boy and fly straight to Miami for the Super Bowl.” — The Wall Street Journal.

“The way they played against Arizona on both sides of the ball will make it tough on the Vikings to win a road game. The Superdome crowd will be a big edge.” — CBSsports.com

“There is no way that I’m picking against the Saints… The Superdome will be rocking Sunday and I’ll be there. I can’t wait.” — Fox Sports’ Terry Bradshaw.

“Wild doesn’t even begin to describe it.” — Sun Herald columnist Jim Mashek describing what he believes the atmosphere in the Dome will be like on Sunday.
