From the office of Mayor George Schloegel
I want to thank the City Council for understanding the importance of removing the debt in our operating budget. The approval of our budget this week was a necessary step in the right direction.
The budget was passed without shifting the burden onto the backs of Gulfport taxpayers, and I congratulate the council on its effort to help us get it done.
In addition this week, we have launched our downtown tax abatement program, which is just another part of a large effort to bring life back to our downtown.
Under the program, qualified owners who upgrade their existing commercial properties will not see a property tax increase for up to seven years. Also, developers of new construction may qualify for the tax freeze.
Also, on Monday two new judges were sworn in at our Municipal Court. For the first time in Gulfport’s history, we now have two full-time judges in our city court, the largest court of its kind in Mississippi in terms of volume.
Again I want to congratulate Felicia Dunn Burkes and Fant Walker on their new positions on the bench. I have complete confidence that they will serve our city fairly and honestly. Those who enter our court will get justice, and that spirit of integrity will spread throughout our city.
Together with your help and support, we are making great progress in the City of Gulfport. Thank you all and have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
George Schloegel
Mayor
