RECREATION
Recreational programming in the Leisure Services
Department has increased dramatically over the past ten years. Thanks to the
efforts of the professional staff many different recreation and
instructional programs are conducted in the city's ten community centers
each month.
The Recreation division also became the one of the
first municipalities in the state to sponsor and operate a SUMMER DAY CAMP
PROGRAM meeting all of the licensing requirements set forth by the
Mississippi State Health Department Child Care Division. This program
annually serves over 700 children ages 5-12 at seven different camp site
locations through out Gulfport.
The Horizons After-School Program offers children educational, social, and
recreational activities to participate in various local community centers in
Gulfport. This program enables children to "expand their horizons" by
exposure to various cultural and recreational activities which are not
always readily available to them. Various community sponsored activities
from homework and tutoring sessions to working with civic clubs and
organizations in local neighborhoods highlight the activities sponsored by
the Leisure Services Recreation Division. Instructional and recreational
programs range from dancing and boxing, to ceramics and karate for citizens
of all ages, throughout the community and recreational centers of Gulfport.
Contact Kerri Paul, Program Coordinator at 214-3600 for more details and
information about these and other recreational programs offered by Gulfport
Leisure Services.
