Tree program working in Jones Park

GULFPORT — To help celebrate National Arbor Day, the Gulfport Beautification Department, at 10 a.m. Friday, will plant the very first trees in Jones Park through the city’s Memorial Tree Program.

“While it is still young, the Gulfport Memorial Tree Program has already done some great things for our city,” said Gus Wesson, the city’s landscape manager. “Friday’s planting will be a first for the newly renovated section of Jones Park.”

The two live oaks, purchased by the Four Seasons Garden Club, will be planted in recognition of Margaret Allen Moyse and in honor of the late Joanne Palmer.

Another tree will be planted later in celebration of the Four Seasons Garden Club’s 60th anniversary.

Jones Park is undergoing a massive renovation, along side the reconstruction of the city’s harbor, and Wesson said the trees will be selected and planted in harmony with the overall plan for the park.

“Because of the current construction, we will postpone additional plantings in the park until the space becomes available,” he said, “but we are taking extra steps to make sure we are in accordance with the overall Jones Park plan.”

Later, local boy scouts from Troop 301 will spend a Saturday assisting the Beautification Department in planting additional Memorial trees throughout the city in the coming weeks.

The Memorial Tree Program is a partnership between the Gulfport Civic League and the City of Gulfport, offering families, organizations and businesses the opportunity to purchase a tree “in memory” or “in honor” of local individuals.
