New plan would balance budget

GULFPORT — During a budget meeting with the City Council this week, the Schloegel administration presented a spending plan that would allow the City of Gulfport to operate in the black for the first time since 2007.

The proposal would balance the city’s finances without raising taxes.

“This is the first step in the process and there could be changes along the way, but we are very confident that this new budget would get us out of the woods and that we can do it without raising property taxes on our citizens,” Mayor Schloegel said.

When the current mayor and council came into office last summer, Gulfport faced a $9 million deficit. The current budget, approved by the City Council in October 2009, cut that deficit in half. The proposed 2010 budget would eliminate the red ink entirely.

Following a series of additional meetings with the City Council, the new budget will be adopted by Oct 1.
