Gaston Point gets splashpad tomorrow

Join Mayor George Schloegel and Councilman Kenneth Casey tomorrow to celebrate the grand opening of the city’s newest splashpad at the Gaston Point Park starting at 11:30 a.m.
The $135,000 splashpad, funded as part of a Community Development Block Grant project, is surrounded by a walking track, playground, open-air pavilion and small concession stand.
This project is a great addition to Gaston Point and the surrounding communities of Ward 1,” Casey said. “Tomorrow will be a great day for the youngsters in our community.”
The Gaston Point Community Center was recently reopened with an addition and contains meeting rooms, community center space and a basketball gym. A small community lighted softball field also is available.
The 1,500-square-foot splashpad features water bucket drops, water rings for children to walk through, and several toddler sprays to allow children an opportunity to cool off during the hot summer months.
The splashpad can be activated from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. The pad is touch activated and runs for seven minutes and then shuts off automatically and can then be reactivated.
A third splashpad is under construction in Jones Park. Mayor Schloegel’s administration hopes to eventually have a splashpad in every community in Gulfport.
If you plan to splash:
— The pad has a concrete surface and aqua socks/shoes are recommended.
— Infants and toddlers need to wear disposable swim pants.
— As with any outdoor summer activity, sunscreen is a must to prevent sunburn.
— Although, the pavilion is located near the pad, parents may wish to bring lawn chairs.
